[VARIOUS SPORTS] ARTICLE HUNT: Friday's Articles Worth Reading

If you've got 15 mins to kill at work or just want to be distracted here's a few articles worth checking out on the world wide web of sports.

* Luke Winn from Sports Illustrated, on the emergence and 'importance' of mock draft websites for NBA prospects:

* Former Sydney Swans star full forward Warwick Capper has reacted with disbelief to his omission from consideration for a 25 years in Sydney Anniversary team announced by journalist Mike Sheahan. Poor guy...

FRIDAY FOOTY PREVIEW – NRL ROUND 14

FRIDAY FOOTY PREVIEW – NRL ROUND 14

[NRL] FRIDAY FOOTY PREVIEW – NRL ROUND 14

Here at EIUOO SPORTS we’ll do our best to give you a leg up in your respective tipping competitions with some quick predictions for the weekend’s football in both codes. Here is the NRL Preview for Round 14.

ROUND 14 PREVIEW
MANLY-WARRINGAH SEA EAGLES
v
SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS
Who I'm Tipping: Sea Eagles by 10
Why? Manly have had a week off to rest any niggling injuries thanks to the bye and although they may have 4 players backing up from Origin and apparently have players struck down with a virus, they should have too much firepower for a South Sydney. I just can't see Souths being able to match Manly offensively although the wet weather again today gives Souths a far better chance if they can turn the game into a forward orientated arm wrestle.

BULLDOGS
v
BRISBANE BRONCOS
Who I'm Tipping: Bulldogs by 8
Why? Both teams need to win this to bring themselves back into the thick of the Top 8 race but the Dogs seem to have weakened themselves by dropping Ben Roberts and Willie Tonga for disciplinary reasons. Quite frankly I expect at least Tonga to play as Phelps could be ruled out with post-concussion syndrome and if he does the Bulldogs might just be too tenacious for what will be a Lockyer-led (but Tate and possibly Hunt-less) Broncos outfit. By no means do the Broncos lack hope in this game but the Dogs pack looks fit and that's why I'm picking them in what will be below average (wet) conditions at Telstra.

CRONULLA-SUTHERLAND SHARKS
v
WARRIORS

Who I'm Tipping: Sharks by 14
Why? Cronulla welcome back a number of key players to the team that overcame the Dragons on Monday night and they will send the Warriors to their 7th straight loss. I tipped the Warriors to overcome a no-name Storm outfit last week because I thought they had far more points in them than the Storm... but they simply played themselves out of that game with a lack of urgency and I cannot tip them away from home.

PENRITH PANTHERS
v
SYDNEY ROOSTERS
Who I'm Tipping: Panthers by 16
Why? The home ground advantage has me behind the Panthers as well as a belief they are a team that follow no form line and as a result might be up for a big win this week. The Roosters did score 64 points last week but due to injury they do not welcome back Minichiello and Anasta to that attacking unit, so although you could argue this could be a bonus to the continuity created last week I simply can't see them getting half as many points this week - even against a team with form as fickle as the Panthers.

NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS
v
MELBOURNE STORM
Who I'm Tipping: Storm by 4
Why? Thurston will play after being cleared of a broken hand but the Cowboys looked so incredibly soft in the middle of the ruck against the Roosters (not to mention the edges and just about everywhere on the field) that tipping them to fix everything up in 7 days is just folly. Sure Thurston can inspire his teammates and bring a significant boost to the team's attacking weaponry but the Storm play a far more disciplined brand of football and welcome back some class of their own.

PARRAMATTA EELS
v
ST.GEORGE-ILLAWARRA DRAGONS
Who I'm Tipping: Eels by 1
Why?
The Dragons are making big strides on the terrible football they were playing a month ago but the Eels will have plenty to prove after being humbled by the Raiders on the weekend. Saints named their best lineup for some weeks but the Eels have both the home ground advantage and their stars returning but even then I don't expect them to walk away with this one. In fact I smell a golden pointer here...

WESTS TIGERS
v
GOLD COAST TITANS
Who I'm Tipping: Tigers by 10
Why? The Tigers made it 7 wins in 8 games by overcoming the Knights on Sunday but they really weren't up against an opponent with any genuine firepower and that should change when they face the Titans. Although Preston Campbell may return from injury as a late inclusion the news that starting prop Luke Bailey may not play has tipped the balance of power back in favour of the Tigers. Watching Robbie Farah and Scott Prince run each team's attack will be reason alone to tune in on Sunday.

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS
v
CANBERRA RAIDERS
Who I'm Tipping: Knights by 18
Why? Canberra certainly blew the Eels away on Saturday night but if you saw them struggle as bad as they did against the Titans a week earlier - you will be hesitant to confidently predict which Canberra side will turn up in Newcastle. The Knights welcome Gidley, Mullen, Buderus, Simpson and Woolnough back this week and realistically these additions turn the Knights into a Top 8 calibre side with the way the competition is travelling this year. But although the Raiders can certainly win this game by playing to their ability, the home ground advantage and return of key players for the Knights have me tipping a big Novocastrian win.
Last week: 3 from 6.

FRIDAY FOOTY PREVIEW: AFL ROUND 12a

FRIDAY FOOTY PREVIEW: AFL ROUND 12a

[AFL] FRIDAY FOOTY PREVIEW: AFL ROUND 12a

Here at EIUOO SPORTS we’ll do our best to give you a leg up in your respective tipping competitions with some quick predictions for the weekend’s football in both codes. Here is the AFL Preview for Round 12a which includes 5 of the 7 games this round.

CARLTON BLUES v HAWTHORN HAWKS
Tip: Hawks by 22 points
Why? Hawthorn can run and gun it with the Blues if need be but their midfield might control the tempo of the game well enough to get a good lead early and keep the Blues at arm's length the rest of the match. Carlton might have some momentum after two wins on the trot but the Hawks will be too good.

KANGAROOS v ADELAIDE CROWS
Tip: Kangaroos by 8 points
Why? Adelaide gave themselves a chance to win against the red-hot Cats but couldn't get it done and there will be a let down this week given they are on the road (Gold Coast) and have added key midfielder Simon Goodwin to a long injury list. The Kangaroos are outsiders yet again despite having 6 wins in their last 7 games and barring a melt-down at Carrara the Roos will make it 7 from 8.

WESTERN BULLDOGS v FREMANTLE DOCKERS
Tip: Bulldogs by 19 points
Why? Fremantle are a team that pretends to be very good at home and shows they are just a little above average on the road. They are going on the road in a big way (as are the Dogs) with the game in Darwin on Saturday night. The Bulldogs surprised me with their ability to switch back on offensively so fast against the Lions and they'll have too much run in their legs for the Dockers in this one.

GEELONG CATS v BRISBANE LIONS
Tip: Cats by 56 points
Why? The Cats are unbackable favourites and although something inside me says the Lions might do the unthinkable and win at Skilled Stadium - my tipping brain (i use that term loosely) won't let me tip against a team with a 6 game winning streak who are at home. Geelong by plenty... or the Lions by a single point!

PORT ADELAIDE POWER v ESSENDON BOMBERS
Tip: Bombers by 13 points
Why? Winning against the 2006 Grand Finalists in consecutive weeks by a single point each time will either make the Bombers supremely confident in their ability to beat anyone or they will suffer horribly with the mental letdown of facing a team without the same 'prized scalp' factor in Port. I've erred on the Power a few times during their current freefall and I can't let them disappoint me again... Bombers to win.

Last week: 4 from 8.

Australia name side for Tri-Nation's opener against South Africa

Australia name side for Tri-Nation's opener against South Africa

[RUGBY UNION] Australia name side for Tri-Nation's opener against South Africa

After constantly tinkering with the lineup in the lead up to the 2003 World Cup and finding attacking continuity problems in the World Cup Final that year a major disadvantage - the Australian coach John Connolly (who was not in charge in 2003) named a full strength lineup in what I hope will be an indication that continuity in the team becomes the norm rather than versatility.

The Australian team is:
15. HUXLEY, Julian
14. MITCHELL, Drew
13. MORTLOCK, Sterling (c)
12. GITEAU, Matt
11. TUQIRI, Lote
10. LARKHAM, Stephen
09. GREGAN, George
08. PALU, Wycliff
07. SMITH, George
06. ELSOM, Rocky
05. VICKERMAN, Dan
04. SHARPE, Nathan
03. SHEPHERDSON, Guy
02. MOORE, Stephen
01. DUNNING, Matt
Bench: (16-22)
FRIER, Adam; BAXTER, Al; CHISHOLM, Mark; HOILES, Stephen; WAUGH, Phil; ASHLEY-COOPER, Adam; GERRARD, Mark.

Australia will start clear underdogs in the match to be played in Cape Town and although I'm sure the squad selected is capable of pulling off an upset - I don't feel confident we will and thus am tipping the Boks by 8 points.

Shaun Berrigan signs with Hull FC

Shaun Berrigan signs with Hull FC

[RUGBY LEAGUE] Shaun Berrigan signs with Hull FC

Shaun Berrigan is swapping the warmth of Queensland for the cold of England in 2008 after signing a 4 year deal with Hull FC in the UK Super League.

Berrigan becomes the second high profile Broncos player to leave the club in the past month after Brent Tate signed to play for the Warriors - both deals start in 2008. The current Queensland and Australian representative will earn some serious coin in England's north west and at 28 he should give his new side a decent return on their investment as he is still in his prime.

The move by Hull comes in the wake of the loss of Paul Cooke to crosstown rivals Hull Kingston Rovers in a mid-season transfer and knowing how much the Hull fans loved Cooke (although not anymore) - I'd say Berrigan's tenacious and high tempo style will make him a fan favourite overnight.

'Hindsighting' the AFL Draft

'Hindsighting' the AFL Draft

[AFL] 'Hindsighting' the AFL Draft

Although the term 'hindsighting' may not actually exist officially it is the word I'm going to use to describe the process of looking back at key decisions with the benefit of hindsight. Yes hindsight is the right term but in order to put that word into a semi-catchy blog title - it must become hindsighting.

But to the topic at hand - the AFL Draft.

The reason the AFL has been able to produce strong teams from around the country and not just in Victoria, has a lot to do with the existence of the Draft and in turn - the ability of clubs around the league to pick the best available young talent from junior leagues across the country. Inside Football - the best weekly sports magazine in Australia - did some hindsighting of their own over the last decade or so of the AFL Draft and listed who they would now pick in the Top 5 if they could redo the draft as of each player's development by 2007.

Wallabies shoot each other to stay awake

[RUGBY UNION] Wallabies shoot each other to stay awake

With the first game of the 2007 Tri-Nations beginning on Saturday night in Cape Town, South Africa; the Australian Wallabies have tried an interesting strategy to help their players deal with jet lag. Arriving from Australia around midday saw the team have the entire afternoon free and coach John Connolly realised that his players needed something other than a training session to keep their minds and bodies occupied and thus fight off the urge to sleep (given it would be nearing bed time back in Australia).

So the team headed off to... paintball.
You'd have thought if they wanted to finish an hour or so with bruises all over their body they'd have just trained...

NFL coach regains right to wear clothes!

NFL coach regains right to wear clothes!

[NFL] NFL coach regains right to wear clothes!

San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Mike Nolan has had his wish to wear a suit on the sidelines at all his team's home games granted by the NFL after a legal issue pertaining to apparel company Reebok's contract with the NFL. Reebok's contract stipulated that they would outfit every coach with clothing branded with each NFL team's colours and logo - obviously as a cross-promotional tool to sell the very same items to the consumer. But Nolan - who took over the 49ers in 2005 has been angling to have a return to the days when the head coach of every team wore a business suit on the sidelines.

Nolan managed to gain clearance to wear a tailored Reebok suit at two of the 49ers home games last year but because Reebok isn't really in the business of selling business suits - they obviously didn't want to have an expensive contract (that has their items on show by both coaches at every home game) to go to waste - and as a result a compromise has been made with Nolan and Jacksonville Jaguars Head Coach Jack Del Rio to allow them to wear Reebok suits at all 8 of their home games.

I guess it begs the question - were coaches consulted on this issue BEFORE the NFL gleefully accepted Reebok's contract?

Origin II: Congratulations Queensland

Origin II: Congratulations Queensland

[RUGBY LEAGUE] Origin II: Congratulations Queensland

The hoodoo is broken and so are the hearts of just about every New South Welshman and New South Welshwoman, as the mighty Maroons claimed their second straight State of Origin Series with a 10-6 victory in Game II at Telstra Stadium.

A crowd of 76,924 wasn't treated to an overly entertaining game of rugby league but it was gripping - a characteristic that State of Origin has owned on the sporting arena since 1980. One radio station covering the post-game was merciless on referee Shayne Hayne, while the other praised the Queenslanders for simply being too good defensively on the night. As for the television coverage it was excellent as always but with the game itself failing to excite - my own devotion to every play was only revived in the final ten minutes. That doesn't mean I didn't pay attention for the other 70 minutes but some games keep you pinned to the edge of your seat... and this was not one of those games until (as a New South Welshman) the final ten minutes.

I have no doubt the classier side won the game, but NSW had three players who can hold their heads very high this morning. Halfback Brett Kimmorley, forward Willie Mason and hooker Danny Buderus put in all they physically could to get NSW the win, but in true Origin fashion their efforts could not overcome the class of arguably the three best players in the game today - all of which play in crucial positions for the Queenslanders. Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston and that man again - Darren Lockyer kept their troops focused on the job at hand and when the big play was needed it was Thurston who provided it (albeit from a blatant forward pass in the lead up) and that proved enough to secure back to back series victories for the Maroons.

Game III shifts back to Suncorp Stadium and it will take an amazing performance by the 17 men NSW select for the match to avoid a series clean sweep.

GAME II RESULT:
QUEENSLAND 10
Tries: G Inglis (21st minute), S Bell (64th minute)
Goals: J Thurston 1 from 2 attempts

Defeated
NEW SOUTH WALES 6
Tries: B Stewart (9th minute)
Goals: J Lyon 1 from 1 attempt.

At Telstra Stadium, Sydney.

QUEENSLAND take 2-0 Series lead and win the 2007 title.

Origin II: The Preview, NSW v QLD

Origin II: The Preview, NSW v QLD
[RUGBY LEAGUE] Origin II: The Preview, NSW v QLD
The equation is simple in tonight's second State of Origin clash for 2007.
NSW must win to keep the series alive and QLD need only a draw to secure a second straight series victory (on the basis that they are the holders from 2006).
Can NSW muster enough points to give their forwards a chance to demonstrate why they've been regarded as a superior unit than their QLD counterparts - ala Game I when NSW used up its point scoring quota in the first half. Up 18-6 at halftime in Game I really should have been a lead big enough to protect but the Blues lost the plot after the break and young Jarrod Mullen could not impose himself on the game to right the ship. NSW are pinning their hopes on a more dominating player in Brett Kimmorley and the formula makes sense if the forwards can stand up and be counted when (or if) Kimmorley can get them a decent lead.
NSW will look to keep the ball moving to both sides of the ruck quickly during each set - and Kimmorley is going to touch the ball at least 3 or 4 times a set so his passing game will be both relied upon heavily and under pressure throughout the night. NSW looked to play Willie Mason and Nathan Hindmarsh on the edges in Game I but they didn't see the ball so that plan will be scrapped despite Kimmorley's presence, mainly because young backrowers Greg Bird and Ryan Hoffman (who I predict will to start for Andrew Ryan or Brett White) excel on the edges and both Mason and Hindmarsh will revel in the confrontation that occurs in the middle of the field. The late addition of Brett Stewart for Anthony Minichiello should boost the team's tryscoring potency but the Blues will miss Minichiello's energy on kick returns.
QLD will stick to their Game I formula of getting a strong go-forward from Steven Price and Petero Civoniceva and kicking judiciously off the back of it and work for a mistake that gives them field position. Then once in an attacking zone they will spread the ball right across their backline and give their skill players the chance to make something happen. NSW really struggled with the speed at which QLD moved the ball in the NSW defensive 20m zone in Game I and you can bet your bottom dollar the Cane Toads will try and replicate that style in Game II. And on kick-returns QLD really have some danger about their back three so look for them to really try and split the line rather than simply get to the line on the bring back.

Have what it takes to own a pro sports franchise?

Have what it takes to own a pro sports franchise?

[MLB BASEBALL/NBA BASKETBALL] Have what it takes to own a pro sports franchise?

As a fan of the two sports discussion programs on ESPN - Pardon the Interruption and Around the Horn (check local guides) - I have come to appreciate the direct approach that Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti takes with his journalism. He's a sports writer who can pass opinion (that is actually based on something solid) on a range of sports but as his main job is based in Chicago he follows the White Sox and Cubs in MLB, Bulls in the NBA and the Bears in the NFL. However I've yet to really hear him talk about the Blackhawks who represent the NHL - but you'll find that Ice Hockey in general gets the raw end of the deal most times when up against the Big 3 of Baseball, Basketball and Football.

In his most recent column, Mariotti discusses the possibility that the owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks - Mark Cuban - may look to buy into the Chicago Cubs baseball franchise and in doing so, as Mariotti believes, give the team and the city hope that their beloved Cubbies may just turn the corner.

The column is well worth checking out for yourself but in relation to the title of this blog - the piece gives you an insight into three key areas of ownership when it comes to professional sports. One, you need the cash and Cuban clearly has that. Two, if your players love you because you pamper them - you are on the way to getting them to put in (for the first few years at least). And finally, Three, you need to be able to play the political game and outmanoeuvre your opponents who despite years of ineptitude on the ownership front - still have friends in all the right places.

Judging by the contents of the column, Cuban has the first two ticked off the checklist... but whether or not he wants to have to deal in the political aspect of ownership will likely decide his course of action with the Chicago Cubs.

Round 14 NRL Teams & Quick Predictions

Round 14 NRL Teams & Quick Predictions

[NRL] Round 14 NRL Teams & Quick Predictions

Teams for Round 14 of the NRL Telstra Premiership have been named but with State of Origin II still to be played out - changes could be coming if injury or suspension strike any of the 34 combatants on Wednesday night.

EIUOO SPORTS gives a quick spin on who we'd pick right now if it was 5:30pm on Friday afternoon. (Note: + = player debut)

FRIDAY: MANLY-WARRINGAH v SOUTH SYDNEY @ BROOKVALE
SEA EAGLES
1-13: B Stewart, Robertson, Bell, Matai, Hicks, Lyon, Orford (c), King, Monaghan, Kite, Watmough, G Stewart, Williamson.
Bench: Halden, Hall, Bryant, Menzies, Neumann, Dunley, Cuthbertson.
RABBITOHS
1-13: Peachey, Merritt, Vagana, Talanoa, Mellor, Rogers, Smith, Cusack (c), Webb, Asotasi (c), Stuart, Fa'alogo, Widders.
Bench: Luke, Rigon, Manuokafoa, Geddes, McPherson.
Wednesday Tip: Sea Eagles
Why? Manly have had a week off to rest any niggling injuries thanks to the bye and although they may have upwards of 4 players backing up from Origin (Kite, Bell, Lyon and possibly Brett Stewart) they should have too much firepower for a South Sydney side that played to its strengths in the wet against Penrith last Friday. I just can't see Souths being able to match Manly offensively.

FRIDAY: BULLDOGS v BRISBANE @ TELSTRA
BULLDOGS
1-13: Patten, El Masri, Millard, Wintana+, Phelps, Holdsworth, Sherwin, O'Meley, Hughes, Mason, Williams, Ryan (c), Maitua.
Bench: Perry, Kouparitsas, Cleal, Hickey.
BRONCOS
1-13: Hunt, Michaels, Boyd, Hodges, Tate, Lockyer (c), Ennis, Hannant, Berrigan, Civoniceva, Parker, Carlaw, Carroll.
Bench: Moon, Eastwood, Thorn, Taylor, Kenny, Te Reo.
Wednesday Tip: Bulldogs
Why? Both teams need to win this to bring themselves back into the thick of the Top 8 race but the Dogs seem to have weakened themselves by dropping Ben Roberts and Willie Tonga for disciplinary reasons. Quite frankly I expect at least Tonga to play as Phelps could be ruled out with post-concussion syndrome and if he does the Bulldogs might just be too tenacious for what will hopefully be a Lockyer-lead Broncos outfit. By no means do the Broncos lack hope in this game but the Dogs pack looks fit and that's why I'm picking them.

SATURDAY: CRONULLA-SUTHERLAND v WARRIORS @ TOYOTA PARK
SHARKS
1-13: Simmons, Brown, Pomeroy, Williams, Covell, Dykes, Kimmorley (c), Douglas, Kingston, Stapleton, Gallen, Weston, Bird.
Bench: Selmes, Leuluai, Perenara, De Gois, Taulapapa.
WARRIORS
1-13: McKinnon, Ah Van, Martin, Hohaia, Vatuvei, Witt, Rovelli, Wiki (c), Gatis, Price, Mannering, Swann, Luck.
Bench: Fien, Koopu, Lauaki, Rapira, Tuimavave.
Wednesday Tip: Sharks
Why? A Sharks side that did just enough to beat the Dragons - despite missing a number of key players - should in theory have plenty in the bank with those players returning and hand the Warriors yet another loss in succession. I tipped the Warriors to overcome a no-name Storm outfit and they simply played themselves out of the game with a lack of urgency and I cannot tip them away from home.

SATURDAY: NORTH QUEENSLAND v MELBOURNE @ DAIRY FARMERS
COWBOYS
1-13: M Bowen, B Bowen, Minto, Graham, Williams, Jason Smith, Thurston (c), Tronc, Payne, Webb, Southern, Lillyman, Bartlett.
Bench: Faiumu, Justin Smith, Scott, Cashmere.
STORM
1-13: Turner, Geyer, King, Quinn, Folau, Inglis, Cronk, Cross, C Smith, White, Newton, Hoffman, Johnson.
Bench: Lima, Crossman, J Smith, Aubusson.
Wednesday Tip: Storm
Why? Thurston or no Thurston - the Cowboys looked incredibly soft in the middle of the ruck against the Roosters, not to mention the edges and just about everywhere on the field. Sure Thurston can inspire his teammates and bring a significant boost to the team's attacking weaponary but the Storm have a host of stars back and a very determined look about them this season.

SATURDAY: PENRITH v SYDNEY @ CUA
PANTHERS
1-13: Wesser, Gordon, Jennings, Lewis, Youngquest, Wallace, Gower (c), Clinton, Priddis, Grant, Pritchard, T Puletua, Smith.
Bench: Worth, F Puletua, Moors, Aiton, Rodney.
ROOSTERS
1-13: Minichiello, Roberts, Monaghan, Soliola, Perrett, Sa, Pearce, Myles, Wing, Nutely, Tupou, Fitzgibbon (c), Anasta.
Bench: Shackleton, L Paea, Aubusson, Harrison, D Williams, Kenny-Dowall.
Wednesday Tip: Panthers
Why? Strictly the home ground factor has me behind the Panthers at this stage. Sure they couldn't score a single try against the Bunnies but realistically a lot of 2007 teams would not have crossed the stripe in those conditions and against South Sydney's disciplined defence. The Roosters scored 64 amazing points and welcome back Minichiello and Anasta to that attacking unit but I simply can't see them getting half as many points this week - even against a team with form as fickle as the Panthers.

SUNDAY: PARRAMATTA v ST.GEORGE-ILLAWARRA @ PARRAMATTA
EELS
1-13: Burt, Hayne, B Smith, Inu, Grothe, Finch, T Smith, Cayless (c), Marsh, MoiMoi, N Hindmarsh, Mateo, Wagon.
Bench: Robinson, Cordoba, Cannings, Riddell, I Hindmarsh.
DRAGONS
1-13: J Morris, Nightingale, Stanley, Cooper, Hewitt, Williams, Soward, Poore, Woolford, Ryles (c), Scott, Houston, Creagh.
Bench: Hunt, Thorby, Setu, Ellis, Payne.
Wednesday Tip: Eels
Why? The Dragons are making big strides on the terrible football they were playing a month ago but the Eels will have plenty to prove after being humbled by the Raiders on the weekend. Saints named their best lineup for some weeks but the Eels have both the home
ground advantage and their stars returning.
SUNDAY: WESTS TIGERS v GOLD COAST @ CAMPBELLTOWN
TIGERS
1-13: McDonnell, Fitzhenry, Collis, Whatuira, Tuiaki, Lawrence, Morris, Payten (c), Farah, Gibbs, Galea, Heighington, Halatau.
Bench: Fulton, Te'o, Harrison, Galloway.
TITANS
1-13: Mathers, Petersen, Rogers, Delaney, Webster, Lewis, Prince (c), Bailey (c), Friend, Stosic, Laffranchi, Minichiello, Swain.
Bench: Hilder, Donnelly, Cooper, Amos.
Wednesday Tip: Titans
Why? The Tigers made it 7 wins in 8 games by overcoming the Knights on Sunday but they really weren't up against an opponent with any firepower and that will change when they face the Titans. Preston Campbell may yet return and if the Titans' pack holds its own then the magic of Prince, Rogers and Presto looks capable of conjuring a victory at Campbelltown.

MONDAY: NEWCASTLE v CANBERRA @ ENERGYAUSTRALIA
KNIGHTS
1-13: Gidley, McManus, L MacDougall, Tighe, A MacDougall, Mullen, Walsh, Perry, Buderus (c), Woolnough, Simpson, Paterson, Tanner.
Bench: Young, Bailey, Tolar, Sargent.
RAIDERS
1-13: Zillman, Milne, Chalk, Best, Goodwin, Campese, Dobson, Tilse, Withers, Logan, Costigan, Turner, Tongue (c).
Bench: Miller, Thompson, Jones, Plum, Cross, Thurling.
Wednesday Tip: Knights
Why? Canberra certainly blew the Eels away on Saturday night but if you saw them struggle mightily against the Titans a week earlier - you will be hesitant to confidently predict which Canberra side will turn up. The Knights welcome Gidley, Mullen, Buderus, Simpson and Woolnough back this week and realistically these additions turn the Knights into a Top 8 calibre side with the way the competition is travelling this year. But the Raiders can certainly win this game but home ground advantage and key players back for the Knights have me tipping the Novocastrians.

What are your tips?

Origin II: Why the series is so great

Origin II: Why the series is so great

[RUGBY LEAGUE] Origin II: Why the series is so great

Tomorrow evening New South Wales and Queensland will take to the field for State of Origin II and in doing so renew the 2007 Series. Queensland took Game I 25-18, coming back from 12 points down at halftime to overrun the Blues at Suncorp Stadium but face their most recent Origin hoodoo - Telstra Stadium. Since the Blues began playing there in 1999 - the only 'positive' result the Maroons have is a Game III draw in 2002 which helped them retain the Origin Shield by virtue of their 2001 Series win. In every other clash at the ground since the 1999 mudbath - NSW has won.

But the beauty of Origin lies not only on the field but off it - in the lounge rooms of New South Welshmen and Queenslanders alike. This time of year brings people who may not have seen each other for 12 months together for one thing - Origin football.

I went to a mate's house for Game I this year (and have frequented this residence due to the presence of a big big wide screen TV the last couple of series) but for Game II this year I shall be heading into Sydney's West South West to catch up with a mate of mine from High School. Not only will I enjoy it on his own big screen television but I'll get to see his lovely wife and 8 month old daughter which I hate to admit I haven't seen yet!

But thanks to Origin football - I'll quite happily make amends.

So you could say Origin football brings people together... but if that is too long a bow to draw - then I'll simply say Go the Blues!

Asante Samuel... unappreciated?

Asante Samuel... unappreciated?

[NFL] Asante Samuel... unappreciated?

If you follow any North American sports you'd be familiar with the amount of money the athletes receive for playing the game they love. However with the massive influx of money into the game over the last ten to twenty years there can be little doubt that players no longer play just for the love of the game.

Case in point New England Patriots Cornerback Asante Samuel who has rejected his team's decision to designate him as their 'franchise player' and thus receive the average salary of the top 5 earners at that position in the NFL. So essentially if the Top 5 players earned $25 million combined then Samuel would be entitled to a 1 year contract at $5 million. That's obviously some great coin but for Samuel he's not happy with being undervalued and frankly - unappreciated by the team that drafted him and developed him into one of the top cornerbacks in the league. Sure the kid has the ability to perform but so do a lot of players who last barely a season in the NFL and find themselves chewed up and spat back out of the league because of a lack of professional development by their teams and a bad attitude.

So now Samuel, who has been offered the paltry sum of $7.8 million to return, has decided in his infinite wisdom to reject the offer because quite frankly his increased per week wage of $458,824* (up from about $42,500 last season) simply isn't enough to respect his standing in the game... or some dribble to that effect.

Just as well he's playing for the love of the game...

Now Real Madrid don’t want Beckham to go…

[FOOTBALL/SOCCER] Now Real Madrid don’t want Beckham to go…

They say football (or soccer for those of us who have yet to fully adapt to the re-branded image of the 11-a-side game in Australia) is a funny game and over in Spain it appears it is also a game where memories are indeed very short. Just months ago when David Beckham announced he had signed to play with the Los Angeles Galaxy in the United States, his current club Real Madrid decided if he was not going to be with them in the future then he would ride the pine for the rest of the current season. In fact the animosity between the two parties escalated to the point where Beckham started to explore his options to get out of his Real contract early and move to the USA in time for the opening of the Major League Soccer season. But when Real started to falter in the Spanish league title race – their coach relented and brought Beckham back into the side and wouldn’t you know it – Real are one win away from the title with Beckham in (by all reports) outstanding form.

And now Real Madrid is looking at ways to keep Beckham around for next season – which of course would mean he would have to be released by his future club the Galaxy. But seriously as much as Beckham loves the spotlight and playing in a team the caliber of Real Madrid – surely he wouldn’t have forgotten how he was treated when he first signed with the Galaxy and you’d have to think he is a million to one of turning his back on the Galaxy contract.
