What a dog of a day: Kobayashi falls by the wayside

[MISCELLANEOUS] What a dog of a day: Kobayashi falls by the wayside

In the end consuming 63 hot dogs in 12 minutes simply wasn't enough for six-time defending Nathan's Hot Dog Competition champion Takeru Kobayashi - as American Joey Chestnut knocked off a whopping 66 to claim the title and the new world record for fast food consumption.

The event is held on July 4 annually and has become quite the cult classic with Kobayashi's fame in his home country of Japan on par with that of a pop star. But the arthritic jaw complaint Kobayashi suffered from coming into the competition proved to great an obstacle to overcome and the Japanese hero had to settle for the silver.

I must pay respect to the brilliant play by play description by the writer of the SI.com article (who by Associated Press styling never gets a by line) who put this together:

"The two gustatory gladiators quickly distanced themselves from the rest of the 17 competitors, processing more beef than a slaughterhouse within the first few minutes. The two had each downed 60 hot dogs with 60 seconds to go when Chestnut -- the veins on his forehead extended -- put away the final franks to end Kobayashi's reign."

I'd love to see an Australian have a go at this next year... so if you're not particularly good at anything bar eating - get in training!
