[BASEBALL] Australia could have a National League within 18 months
Foxsports.com.au is reporting that Major League Baseball is looking to invest nearly $15 million in order to setup a National Baseball League in Australia. In the 1990s the ABL while not overly successful in making inroads into the major Australian sports - it got decent coverage in the press to the extent that as a Sydneysider I knew when the Sydney Blues were in contention for the title - they won in 1995/1996. Now it appears that with a growing development base in Australia providing a steady stream of prospects to the Major Leagues in the USA, scouts and general managers from those MLB teams see the value in giving young Australian prospects the chance to develop their games in their home country first so they don't get rushed and burned out by moving to the Minor League system in the USA and Canada too soon.
