Time for bowling machines in English County Cricket
[CRICKET] Time for bowling machines in English County Cricket
Over the past few years if you've ever checked the scorecards for a County Cricket fixture in England invariably you'll see both team's scoring a boatload of runs for the loss of minimal wickets and an actual outright result seems rarer than hen's teeth.
But the recent Essex v Nottinghamshire four-day game produced a draw that makes a mockery of both the ability of the County bowling attacks and the fact the pitches are nothing short of batting paradises.
In the space of four days a total of 1,554 runs were scored for the loss of just 20 wickets (an average of 77.7 runs per batsman) and a mammoth 390.4 overs were bowled!
Essex batting first declared at 9/700 in 151.5 overs and then in reply Nottinghamshire put up 791 all out in 212.5 overs. Essex batted again for 26 overs in their 2nd innings to end the game at 1/63 as the game petered out into a draw.
Seriously if any fans attending the game had to pay to get in they should be refunded double. Not that I can vouch for the entertainment value in the batting but honestly if the bowling attacks of both sides can not bowl out the other side for less than 700 runs - Houston we've got a problem in the bowling stocks.
As a bowler myself this kind of result just makes me cringe and feel sorry for the poor blokes who delivered delivery after delivery for four days without any reward. But I guess on the bright side a guy like Andy Bichel who bowled 32 fairly fruitless overs - still scored 148 runs batting at #8 proving even bowlers got amongst the runs!
